Doorstep School was established in Mumbai, India in the year 1988 with an aim to make 100% literacy rate a reality. Now, Door step organisation has 750+ members and they have served more than 30,000 underprivileged children.

You must have heard it, “Where there is a will, there is a way.” But there are very few people who have courage to take initiative to bring a change. Meet one of our unseen hero “Mrs Rajani Paranjpe”, popularly known ”Rajani Taai”, who did something extra ordinary for education in our society.


 In this article, we are going to share her journey, who dedicated her life in improving the literacy and uplifting the life style of underprivileged children of our society.


Rajani Tai has a vision to make 100% literacy rate in our society a reality. From her social working experience, she believes that education is the single most important factor that could bring about a change in lower strata of our society.


For the vision to bring a change, she had started an amazing initiative called “Door Step school” in 1988 from Mumbai, with her Ex-student Mrs. Bina Lashkari. The Door Step Volunteers goes wherever there is children and start taking classes there. They try to teach of children of age 3 years to 18 years. They generally opt places like foothpath, construction sites, railway and bus station, outside the malls and markets etc.
            Apart from their vision of improving literacy rates in depreciated section, they have started other projects targeting their needs and challenges faced by them. Such projects are “School on Wheels, Teach them Young, Every child Counts and many more”.
Rajani Tai also have a Master’s degree in social work and 20 years of teaching experience. In addition to teaching she had also headed the Research Department and Anganwadi Training Center at the College of Social Work.
This is the special thing about heroes,”They are ordinary people, but their thought, idea and work for our society, makes them extraordinary”.
