Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI)

Recently, India has joined “Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI)” as a founding member, to support responsible and human-centric development and usage of Artificial Intelligence (AI). GPAI is a group of leading world economies like The USA, The UK, EU, Germany, Italy, Japan, Australia, Canada, France, Mexico, Singapore, New Zealand, and The Republic of Korea.

GPAI is an international and multi-stakeholder initiative to guide the responsible development and the use of AI in a manner which is based on human rights, fundamental freedoms and mutual democratic values. It will consolidate leading experts from Industry, Government and Academia, to partner and promote responsible evolution of AI and to develop methodologies to deal with Global issues.

The participating nations of GPAI will consider experimentation to create a controlled setting in which AI systems can be easily tested, and scaled up, as needed. The GPAI will have four working groups each centred on responsible AI, the future of work, data governance, and commercialisation and Innovations. The first meeting of GPAI will take place by the end of 2020.

What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

AI is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs.

Role of OECD in GPAI?

The Organisation for Economic Corporation and Development (OECD) will enable the GPAI to create a strong relationship between Policy development and Technical discussion on AI, by applying OECD principles on Artificial Intelligence. It will also host the Secretariat of GPAI in Paris, along with two centres of expertise, one each in Montreal and Paris.

The OECD AI principles were basis of the G20 Principles on AI promoted at the Osaka Summit in 2019.

Role and Opportunities for India?

GPAI is a laudable initiative towards bridging the hiatus between theory and practice, and bolstering usage of AI in cutting-edge research for inclusive growth. India is a founding member of the GPAI and is expected to play a critical role in the responsible development and utilisation of AI for the world. Recently, India has formed various committees to boost National AI strategy and developed National AI portal to bring the positive impact of AI technology across various economic sectors like agriculture, education, healthcare, communications and finance etc.

India will actively participate in the global development of Artificial Intelligence, leveraging upon its experience around use of digital technologies for inclusive growth
